Are You Sleepwalking?
“Be very careful, then, how you live— not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” - Ephesians 5:15-16
If someone gave you $86,400 in cash today, and you could spend or invest it however you wanted—the only rule is that you cannot save any of it, tomorrow it is all gone—how much of it would you utilize? The question seems crazy. We would answer, “ALL OF IT,” of course.
Did you know that in each day you have 86,400 seconds? None of which rolls over to the next day. You do not get to keep any. Yet how many seconds do we waste? We think when it comes to money, we must use it all valuably, but is time not so much more important than money?
As a Christian, you are on an assignment, walking the path of wisdom and integrity for Christ. With this truth in mind, Paul warns us not to waste our time. In verses 15 and 16 of Ephesians 5, he says, “Be very careful, then, how you live— not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
What Paul is calling for here is for believers to be wise and understand that time is of the essence. He says the days are evil. Evil expires. Evil has an expiration date. Evil dies. As humans our days are numbered. We all know this. But the question is, are you living your days to the fullest? Or are you sleepwalking through life?
Paul is saying “do not walk in your sleep! Wake up! Open your eyes! Make the most of the day!” It is sad to see many professed Christians “drift” through life like sleepwalkers, who never really make the most of opportunities to live for Christ and serve Him. This is why Paul says to walk wisely. Understand your days are numbered, as are the seconds in your day. As valuable as you think money is, so is time. God wants you to use every second of every day, wisely. Will you be a good steward of your time?
