A Faithful Servant
“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” - Proverbs 18:24
The biblical story of Ruth portrays the kind gesture of a daughter-in-law, and the reward that follows such act.
Ruth and Orpah, two Moab women, married two sons of Elimelech and Naomi. When Ruth, Orpah, and Naomi’s husbands died, Naomi made plans to return to Bethlehem, and urged her daughters-in-law to return home to their families. Orpah did so, but Ruth decided to stay with Naomi declaring, “For wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried” (Ruth 1:16-17).
Back in Bethlehem, Elimelech had a wealthy relative named Boaz, who allowed Ruth to glean in the fields during the barley harvest. Boaz took notice of Ruth. Ultimately, Boaz and Ruth married and gave birth to Obed, who was the grandfather of King David, and ultimately an ancestor of Jesus. Although Ruth did not set out to marry, but to be a comforter to Naomi, the Lord favored her and her lineage.
A story that began in tragedy ultimately ended in God’s redemption, due to the faithfulness of Ruth. Your story may not look like Ruth’s, but God does have a calling over your life. The question is, will you be faithful to God’s will or will you follow your own will.
Everyone is significant in God’s kingdom. He is not looking for perfection, but faithfulness. Will you answer His call over your life?
