Loving From A Distance
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. – John 15:12
It is easy to love someone who is loving, but what about those who you consider to be hard to love? It’s often difficult to love others because our love is conditional, based on how we feel. However, God measures love by our obedience and not our transitory emotions.1 John 5:2-3 states, “This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.”
1 John references agape love, love that is patient and kind, love that is selfless, merciful, and that which persists regardless of one’s attitudes and actions. God shows us this love through His grace and mercy, and we are called to do the same for others.
Does this mean settling for abuse, disrespect, or neglect? NO! This does not even require residing in the same spaces as the individual(s). You can care from a distance! Wish that person well, pray for a renewal of their mind and heart, pray for healing in your mind and heart, and keep it moving.
Some people are blessings in your life and some people are lessons. But regardless of their position, God’s command remains the same—to love them. As Mahatma Gandhi says, “Where there is love there is life.”
Who in your life can you show a little more love towards? Set your pride aside and make the decision today to love.
