Better From A Distance

“So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company.” – Genesis 13:11

I’ll never forget a trip I took to New York one time. I was in Times Square looking for a billboard that a friend of mine purchased. When I got there, I could not see the billboard. So I called my friend and said, “Hey I’m on 42nd street and Broadway and I don’t see your sign.” He told me to go up to 49th street and to then look back. I listened to what he said and began walking further away from the billboard. Just as I got to 49th street, I saw the billboard perfectly.  

The problem was, I was underneath the sign the whole time. I couldn’t see it because I was too close. This not only applies to billboards, but also to circumstances in our own lives. Sometimes we must move away from certain situations and people so we can see things more clearly.  

Abram understood this. He knew for him and his nephew Lot to remain close, they needed distance between them. This seems counterintuitive, but it was certainly effective. They both had outgrown the space they were in, and in order maintain their relationship, they needed to part ways.
 
Is there something you are doing, or someone you are close to, that you need to step away from? Distance does not necessarily mean the relationship or experience is over. Often, distance can strengthen the relationship while giving both sides time to see things from a fresh perspective.  
Give it some time and maybe you just might see things more clearly from a distance.
