What You Conceal… Can’t Be Healed
“They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” - Genesis 3:8-10
In Genesis chapter 3, after Adam and Eve sinned, they tried to hide from God because they were ashamed. Oftentimes, instead of admitting our sins to God, we separate ourselves from God out of shame. However, the only way we are going to experience freedom in Christ is to admit when we have slipped up.
When you go to God, you do not have to put on a mask of perfection. You can just be honest. It is key to the process of having a healthy heart. Everyone falls short of the glory of God at some point.
Being honest with God frees you from the pressure of bottling up all your feelings and holding everything in. Suppressing emotions and negative feelings adversely affects a person’s body and mind. A 2013 study by the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Rochester found that people who bottled up their emotions increased their chance of premature death from all causes by more than 30% and increased their risk of a cancer diagnosis by 70%.
If you want God to heal the problems and challenges you face, you must be honest and open about them. It is perfectly okay to not have everything together! That is life. But if you will be honest, you can experience the power of God helping you. That is a power you definitely want to tap into.
