Standing At The Door
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.” - Revelation 3:20-21
There was a young salesman who made a living selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door in the 1940s. One day he knocked on the door of a bright young housewife who figured she would listen to his sales pitch in which he was showcasing the wonders of the Kirby Dual Sanitronic 50, a two-speed, dual vacuum cleaner that could both vacuum the floor and shampoo the carpet. It was advertised as being able to vacuum dust, nails, marbles, and stones; you name it, the vacuum could clean it.
As the housewife listened in awe of the machine and the information being shared by the young salesman, she asked a salient and poignant question, “How do you know young man that this machine really works? How do you know it will do all that you say it will do? I have never seen a vacuum really pick up nails, rocks, leaves, and all the other things that you claim.”
The salesman replied, “Ma’am, I’ve tried it for myself, and ever since that day I’ve wanted to do nothing but sell this machine. And I’m convinced that if this vacuum can work for me, I know it will work for you. That is why I am here knocking at your door, so I can demonstrate it to you.”
The passion of the young salesman is in many ways similar to the deep love contained within the heart of Christ, who like that young salesman stands at the door of our lives knocking, inviting us to let Him in. When He came to earth, Jesus knew the love of the Father, and he wanted everyone he met to experience that love the way he had. The good news is He is still offering that same love today. Will you open the door and let God love you and lead your life?
