Getting to The Root of The Matter (Pt. 2)
“If you say, ‘How we will hound him, since the root of the trouble lies in him, you should fear the sword yourselves; for wrath will bring punishment by the sword and then you will know that there is judgment.” - Job 19:28-29
If you did not have a chance to read yesterday’s devotion, if you have some time, try to go back and take a look. We ended with a message about getting to the root of the matter. When you have a “disease,” issue, or problem in your life, you must find the root of that problem in order to figure out the best way to cure the disease.
You most likely already know that one thing that you need to remove from your life. Maybe you even pray and ask God to remove it for you. While at times He might, other times it might have to be you who removes it. See God is more concerned with your growth than the ultimate destination. A lot of us can think “if I could just remove ‘this’, or I didn’t have ‘that’ in my life, I could be so far, I could achieve _______.” You fill in the blank.
But God is not just concerned about you reaching your goal or dream, He is most concerned about your character and the process of you becoming more and more like Jesus Christ. So rather than removing the issue or problem you are dealing with, God is likely to challenge you in ways that give you the opportunity to choose against it. Whether it’s an addiction that keeps calling your name, or a person in your life that maybe you enjoy hanging out with, but just isn’t a good influence in your life. Or maybe it’s a habit you need to break.
Whatever the case, God does not force you to stop. He wants you to choose against it. If you pray for help removing the problem, be prepared for God to answer you. But just know, when He does, He is going to place you in situations in which you will have to choose against what you have commonly given into. To eliminate the issue, you must get to the root, and that often means facing the problem head on. Pray to God, His strength is sufficient and He will help you.
