Choosing God’s Best Pt. 2
“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate, I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. ” - Romans 7:15-18
As we discussed yesterday, choosing God’s best really comes down to deciding to reject your sinful nature and choose the way of the Spirit, the voice God uses inside of you to steer you towards what is best. In its clearest form, this is a decision between what you want now and what you want most.
Though we have been given a sinful nature, what we truly desire is God and the plan He has for our lives. He made you with a desire to chase him. The reality is only God can satisfy your every need. When you give into sin, it only leaves you wanting more. That desire is never satisfied. As soon as you are finished, you will regret the choice you made, and then as time goes on you will want it in a greater capacity until you give in, and then the cycle of regret begins again.
God does not desire for you to go through this never-ending, unsatisfying cycle. He has given you the Spirit to lead you to what you desire most, and that is his perfect will for your life. In Psalms 37, God promises to give you the desires of your heart. Now, most people read this and immediately pray for self-satisfying, short-term desires. What God promises is to give you what you desire most. Far more often than not, you do not even realize what it is you want most. God will reveal this to you as you pursue Him. He changes your desires to match His.
When your desires align with God’s and the timing is right, He will give you these desires. And when He does, you will realize that He really does give you what you want most. It might just take time figuring out what that is. But when you chase God’s will, you will find God’s best!
