What Value Do They Have?
“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.” - Proverbs 12:26
There is a quote that says “You become like the 5 people you spend the most time with. Choose carefully.” While this quote is not taken directly from Scripture, there is a lot of truth to it, and perhaps it is the reason the Bible talks so much about choosing your friends carefully. The question you must ask yourself is, “what value do the people around me add to my life?”
The people you are spending the most time with do play an important role in how you are shaped. Physically, do they encourage you to eat healthy and workout, or do they want you to eat junk food with them and watch Netflix 24/7? Mentally, do they motivate you to chase your ambitions and dreams, or do they discourage you from achieving the greatness you know is inside of you? Spiritually, do you feel challenged and hungry to pursue God’s calling when you’re around them, or do they say praise, prayer and worship is a waste of time?
Who you decide to surround yourself with is vital. You want to choose people who align with the person God has created you to be, people who will support His calling for your life. Take the time now to make a list of the five people you spend the most time with. Then ask yourself, “What value do each of these people add to my life?” Do they align with the person I want to be and who God wants me to be? Is there anyone you may need to spend a little less time with or little more? This might just change the direction of your life! Remember, “The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
