You Do You… Single
“I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs— how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world— how he can please his wife— and his interests are divided...” - 1 Corinthians 7:32-34
“You do you.” It is a phrase that has become common in today’s society. The basic meaning behind the phrase is simply to do what you want to do, without taking into account others’ opinions or judgements. The idea of this phrase has some truth to it, when it is rooted in direction from God. If God gives you instructions or direction, it is then time to “do you.” However, we often believe that we have to be in a romantic relationship with someone in order to be able to effectively carry out the will of God. For we say, “if I had a partner, I would be more effective.”
Society teaches us that we must be in relationship, or we need to get in one as quickly as possible. Despite that idea, the passage above shows why you should be content when you are single. Although you can be in a relationship or married and still serve God, singleness serves a purpose. You have more time to serve God, as you are not bound to the responsibilities that come with that relationship.
God created us all with intent to form relationships, whether that be family, friends, or romantic partners. But that does not mean you must at all times be in a romantic relationship. God can use your singleness to achieve great things for His kingdom and grow you in amazing ways.
Oftentimes, God will use the circumstances that He places you in during your single stage to mold you into the person He wants you to be in the relationship. We will talk more about that tomorrow. But for today, remember you can “do you” single. You can be confident, grow, and serve God alone. And in doing so, He might just be preparing you for the relationship you have always dreamed of.
