Avoid The Unwise
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. (Ephesians 5:15-17)
When you’re under the influence of the Spirit, like we talked about yesterday, you don’t waste your time on things, activities, and people that don’t matter. Paul is affirming this mentality in his letter to the Ephesians, saying not to waste time walking around with the unwise.
The more time you spend with unwise people, the more they’re going to rub off on you. You’ll begin to look like them, talk like them, act like them, make decisions like them, and waste time like them. Before long, even if you were once considered wise, you will start to live under the influence of the example of your unwise friends.
As we live our lives as followers of Jesus, we cannot leave the Christian life to chance. We must make wise decisions and seek to do the will of God. Not wasting time goes hand in hand with purpose. It is so sad to see many Christians drift through life, like sleepwalkers, who never really make the most of opportunities to live for Christ and serve Him. If we are to walk with the wise, that means walking with a purpose and a destination in mind. Wise walking is being guided by the Spirit and not by one’s own impulses.
Are you walking with the wise or the unwise? If the former is true, I pray that you would continue to draw close to those wise people in your life and seek their counsel and encouragement as you follow Christ. However, if the latter is true, I hope that you would begin to distance yourself from these unwise companions, and simultaneously begin praying that the Lord would provide you with wise friends and mentors. This is a prayer God would absolutely love to answer, as He desires for you to grow in wisdom as you live your life according to His will.
