Watering Fake Relationships
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)
A friend of mine has a 3-year-old daughter, and like all 3-year-olds, she does everything she sees her grandmother do. Her grandmother loves flowers, so my friend bought the little one a plastic flower set he saw in a toy store. What her dad did not know was that his little girl would take whatever liquid she could find and try to water the fake plant. Her dad thought it was cute. However, what is cute at 3 is crazy at 30.
There is somebody reading this devotion today, still trying to water an inauthentic and fake relationship. You know it’s not real because no matter how much you pour into it, it won't grow. No matter how hard you try, no matter how much effort you put in, no matter how much grace you show or how many second chances you hand out, the relationship isn’t going anywhere.
Part of having wisdom is knowing when to walk away from a relationship that is going nowhere. Relationships are meant to grow and mature. They aren’t meant to remain stagnant. A person you’re in a relationship with, whether it’s a dating relationship or a friendship, should be making you better. They should be spurring you on, encouraging you and challenging you to grow in your walk with the Lord and to become more like Jesus Christ. If they’re not doing that, or furthermore, if they’re having the opposite effect and pulling you away from the Lord, then it might be time to walk away.
My prayer is that if you find yourself in one of these types of relationships, you will have the courage to move on. Even though it might be hurtful, heartbreaking, and disappointing for a little while, in the long run, you won’t regret walking away from someone who isn’t pointing you to Jesus.
