Convinced Of God’s Faithfulness
And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because considered him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. – Hebrews 11:11-12
The seventeenth-century Puritan preacher, Thomas Fuller, said that all mankind was divided into three classes of people: the intenders, the endeavorers, and the performers. As we read the story of Abram, we see that Terah, Abram’s father, may have been an intender, but he never made it into the land of promise. Lot was an endeavor-er up to a point, but he failed miserably because he could not walk by faith. Abram was a performer because he trusted God to perform what He promised.
Here’s how Paul put it in Romans 4:18-21, “Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.”
Abram committed his life and future to God, obeyed what He commanded, and received all that God planned for them. Faith brought Abram out, but it also brought him through. Paul said he went forward into the will of God without knowing what was to come because he was fully convinced that God was able to do what he promised. And at a certain point, all of us must be able to give that same testimony. We must be convinced that He knows what’s He’s doing; and therefore, wherever He leads, we will follow.
