Willing To Take The First Step
For we walk by faith, not by sight. – 2 Corinthians 5:7
The story is told of a young man who ran out of gas on the side of the road. He knew he was going to have to push his car to the nearest exit that was really close, but he needed a little help.
He tried to flag people down and one after another they passed him by, so he got frustrated and sat in the car. After a while, he went back out and tried to flag people down but people just continued to pass him. In his desperation, he decided he would just roll up his sleeves and start pushing the car by himself. To his amazement when he started pushing, people started pulling over to help him push.
Sometimes that’s what God is waiting for…for you to do your part and help yourself in whatever way you can so that He can fill in the gaps that you can’t. Maybe you’ve been flagging Him down in prayer asking him to open the doors for you to start the business you’ve been dreaming about, but nothing is happening. Maybe you’ve tried to flag Him down in prayer asking him to get you back in school, but there’s been no progress in getting an answer. Or maybe you’ve been flagging Him down and praying about whether or not you should write a book. Meanwhile, God is trying to see if you are willing to not only ask for His help, but if you’re willing to take the first step.
In the words of Dr. King, “faith is taking the first step without seeing the stairwell.” Our job is to take the first step of faith, even though we can’t see the entire stairwell. And when we do, God will step in and do the rest. He wants to see our willingness and our faithfulness. So let’s choose to step out on faith, and then see how God shows off from there.
