Don’t Lose Focus
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. – Psalm 121:1-2
Something we all need to understand is that the key to recovery has a lot to do with where your focus is. Albert Einstein once said, “If you want to live a healthy and happy life, tie it to a steady goal and a vision.” Paulo Coelho talked about focus this way “Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate, and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.” Jesus also talked about the importance of focusing on the right things when He said in Luke 9:62, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
The key is not what’s behind you, but what’s ahead of you. And if we can remember that truth and cling to it, our breakthrough will come.
I like the fact that in the face of all the devastation and disappointment happening around him, David doesn’t spend much time focusing on what he lost, or what others did or said. He makes sure, instead, to focus on what he has to do next. In 1 Samuel 30:6, Scripture says he inquired of the Lord seeking guidance and direction.
What God-given wisdom and direction are you neglecting to use for your restoration because your focus is off? God wanted David then and wants us now to know that recovery requires us to direct our energy towards the future and what it holds, rather than expending so much energy on the past.
God says, I know your past may have been traumatic and disappointing, but your future is greater. David kept his focus because he understood that if the enemy can attack your focus, if he can get you to look at what you lost and feel down about who wasn’t there for you, then he doesn’t have to destroy you, you’ll destroy yourself with doubt and discouragement. So don’t sabotage your own opportunity to heal, recover, and grow. Instead, keep your focus on the Lord and on His direction, and He will guide you down the right path.
