Shouting for Joy
Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. (Acts 3:4-10)
In today’s key passage, when Peter took hold of the lame beggar’s hand and lifted him up, the Bible says in that moment, strength came into the man’s feet and ankle bones for the first time in his life. When this happened, he leapt into the air, and began walking and jumping around, praising the Lord.
And not only was he walking and jumping and worshiping, but the people around him recognized him as the once lame beggar who used to sit outside of the temple gate, and they were in awe of what they were seeing, amazed at the miraculous healing that had taken place.
The man went from lame to leaping. He went from sitting to shouting. He was completely changed, everything about him seemed different, because not only had he been physically healed, but he had been spiritually healed as well. He was healed from the inside out, and he wanted everyone to know it.
What would it look like if the healing and changing work God has done in our own lives was this obvious to the people around us? What if we leapt and praised and worshiped God more boldly for all that He has done in our lives? Just think of the impact we could make on the people around us, the people who need to hear the Gospel, if they could see how obvious it was that we belong to Jesus, and He is the reason we can always shout for joy.
