More To Life
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (Matthew 6:25)
Recently I looked at a list of the top selling books on platforms like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online distributors, and I discovered that books on success were some of the most popular books on the market. There seemed to be an endless number of books claiming to espouse wisdom on how to live the good life, how to attain one’s highest dreams, and how to possess all that life has to offer.
Now, I’m sure as you’re reading this, you’re thinking, “I want all of those things!” You want to be successful in your relationships, your finances, and your job. You want to grow in your walk with God, and you want to accomplish and exceed all that you could ever imagine.
While I’ll be the first to say that wanting these things is not wrong in and of itself, a problem can arise when we derive our notions of success from the world and not from God. There are times when the world places a premium on how something appears or on how someone looks. So if someone dresses well, drives a nice car, lives in a big house, takes elaborate vacations, and has a substantial following on social media, we assume they’re happy, successful, and content.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen to many people who seem to have it all who are depressed, afraid, hurting, and dissatisfied because they have put too much of an emphasis on what the world says makes them successful, rather than going to God for His definition of success.
There is more to life than what this world can offer us. Let’s remember that when we are tempted to put all of our time, energy, and resources into acquiring the things we think we need to be deemed successful. Instead, let’s prioritize our walk with the Lord above anything and anyone else. Let’s make seeking Him and glorifying Him our number one goal, for that is when we will experience true success.
