God Is Sovereign
Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. (Jeremiah 32:17)
If you go to places in the world like Greenland where there are a lot of icebergs, you will notice that some icebergs are big, and some are small. If you look closely, you’ll also notice that sometimes the small icebergs move in one direction while the bigger ones flow in a different direction. This happens because the surface winds move the little ones, while the huge ones are carried along by the current deep within the bottom of the ocean.
When trials and tragedies come our way, it is helpful to see our lives as being subject to two forces – surface winds and ocean currents. The surface winds represent everything changeable, unpredictable, and distressing. But beneath the surface there is something more powerful. It is the movement of God’s sovereign hand, the deep current of His unchanging love.
We must have the mentality that we are not going to be moved by the surface winds of life because we understand that ultimately God is in control. There is absolutely nothing that happens in the universe that is outside of God’s influence and authority. As King of kings, and Lord of lords, God has no limitations.
Scripture makes many references to the sovereignty of God. Revelation 21:6 says that God is above all things and before all things. He is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. Colossians 1:16 says God created all things and holds all things together. Romans 11:33 says God knows all things past, present, and future. There is no limit to his knowledge. Jeremiah 32:17 says that God can do all things and accomplish all things because nothing is too hard for Him. The list of verses goes on and on.
The point is, God is sovereign over everything and everyone. He is all-knowing and all-powerful, and we can trust that as His children, He is stronger than anything else we could possibly be faced with in this life. So if you find yourself today in a mindset of worry, anxiety, disappointment, or confusion, rest in the sovereignty of God.
