Bigger Than the Building
“But as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” – Genesis 50:20
We all get attached to the spaces we worship in. The sanctuary, the stained glass, the gathering of people who feel like family. But the longer you walk with God, the more you realize His presence isn’t locked inside a building. He moves beyond our traditions, our routines, and even our comfort zones.
In the book of Acts, the early church learned this lesson firsthand. For a while, the message of Jesus stayed mostly within familiar circles. But God had bigger plans. Between Acts chapters 8 and 11, something shifted. The gospel started moving beyond just the Jewish community. It began to spread across cultures, social classes, and national boundaries. God disrupted their expectations to expand His mission.
One key part of that shift was the encounter between Peter and Cornelius. Peter was a Jew. Cornelius was a Roman officer, a Gentile. By tradition, these two should never have crossed paths, let alone shared a moment of spiritual unity. But God gave both men a vision that broke their categories. Peter went, Cornelius listened, the gospel was preached, and the Holy Spirit fell. New methods, same message. And the result? A greater move of God.
If we’re not careful, we can cling to our old methods and miss fresh moves of God. We can turn sacred rhythms into rigid routines. But the gospel has always been about reaching people, not preserving systems. When Jesus said the good news would go to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, He meant it. And that means stepping out of what’s safe.
Maybe you’ve sensed that nudge lately. A feeling that God wants to use you in ways that don’t fit your usual mold. If so, trust Him. The same Spirit that stirred Peter is still moving today. God is still stretching His church so the world can see His love, His hope, and His power.
You don’t have to wait for everything to feel familiar again. God is already moving. The question is, will you move with Him?
