Understanding the Source of Your Fear
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
We all experience fear from time to time, but chronic fear, the kind that paralyzes us, consumes our thoughts, and keeps us trapped, does not come from God. Paul makes it clear to Timothy that when fear takes over and hinders us from living the full, abundant life God has for us, we must examine the source.
In today’s world, we are bombarded by fear-inducing messages everywhere we turn. News outlets constantly highlight disasters, conflicts, and tragedies, filling our minds with the idea that the world is a terrifying place. Social media feeds us unrealistic standards, making us feel inadequate as we compare ourselves to others.
Advertising and corporations exploit our insecurities, suggesting that our worth is based on what we buy, what we wear, or how we look. These influences can easily take hold of us and fuel chronic fear; fear of the unknown, fear of the future, fear of not being enough. But Paul reminds us that this type of fear is not from God. So, we must pay attention to the sources that are feeding it.
Just recently, I took a break from my favorite news channel for a few days, and the change was immediate. The constant stream of negative headlines, from threats of war to natural disasters, was creating a sense of fear in my own mind.
After just three days away from the media, I felt lighter and more at peace. This experience taught me an important lesson: to manage chronic fear, we need to evaluate what’s feeding it. Is it a certain environment, a constant stream of negative news, or even inherited fears from those around us?
To move beyond chronic fear, we must replace these harmful sources with the resources God has provided us. In 2 Timothy, Paul shifts the focus away from fear and reminds us of the powerful tools God has given us: power, love, and self-control. These are the keys to overcoming fear.
First, we must recognize that we have God’s power within us. This power is not just a feeling, it’s a divine force that can help us face challenges, defeat fears, and live with courage. When we understand the source of our fear, we can stand firm on what God has given us to conquer it. Fear might be a natural emotion, but we don’t have to let it control us. With God’s power, we can rise above it.
