Let Go of What Chokes You
"And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?" - Luke 12:25
The word "worry" comes from an ancient term that means "to choke or strangle." It's a vivid description, isn’t it? When anxiety takes control, it can feel like it’s squeezing the life out of you. So, I want to ask you today: what is choking you?
What has you feeling so worried that you feel locked in, locked up, and locked out? Is it your health? Maybe it’s your finances, wondering if there’s enough to make it through the month. Are you stressed about tensions in your family or an unresolved conflict that keeps you awake at night?
It’s normal to think about the future and prepare for what might come. In fact, anxiety can sometimes feel like it’s trying to help us. It’s a natural response to the unknown, and it means well. It tries to protect us by keeping us alert, making sure we don’t get caught off guard. But when worry becomes excessive, when it strangles your peace, consumes your thoughts, and controls your reactions, that’s when it becomes a problem.
I’m not talking about planning for the future or being cautious. That’s wise. But I’m talking about the kind of worry that takes over your body and mind, leaving you crippled by fear of what might happen. It creeps into your relationships, your work, your sleep, and your joy. It robs today of its strength because you're so preoccupied with tomorrow’s uncertainties.
Jesus asks us in Luke 12:25, “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” Worrying doesn’t change the future, it only steals from the present. If you’re feeling choked by fear today, it’s time to let go. Let go of what you can’t control and trust God to handle tomorrow. In surrender, you’ll find that your strength is renewed and your spirit freed to live fully in the moment.
