Surrender The Wheel
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:5-6
Life presents us with countless decisions, crises, and challenges. How we handle these moments often reveals who or what is driving our lives. Sometimes, we let the wrong parts of ourselves take the wheel—rage, resentment, bitterness, fear, shame, low self-esteem, abandonment—and the results can be disastrous.
Imagine being in a situation where your response is driven by anger or bitterness. Perhaps you lashed out, said something hurtful, or sought revenge. Maybe it was fear that paralyzed you, or shame that led you to lie or hide your true self. While these reactions might have felt justified in the moment, they don't reflect God's highest and best for your life.
In a sense, this is what the Apostle Paul was addressing in his letters to the early church. He provided guidance on who or what should be in the driver’s seat of our lives. In Paul's time, many believed that decisions should be driven by logic, philosophy, and reason.
Others thought that feelings and emotions should lead, while some followed tradition and custom. However, all these approaches can lead to wreckage because they place the wrong parts of us in control.
Reason can lead to cold, calculated revenge. Emotions can prompt regrettable outbursts. Tradition can perpetuate unfair treatment based on biases and prejudices. The critical question we must ask ourselves is: “Who’s driving my car?”
Is it anger and bitterness from past wounds? Is it a hurt inner child neglected or abandoned long ago, influencing how you treat those close to you now? Is it fear, perhaps from past abuse, making you distrustful and afraid? Is shame driving your car, causing you to wear a mask and seek constant validation? Or is low self-esteem leading you to suppress your true thoughts and needs for the sake of acceptance?
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not to lean on our own understanding. When we submit to Him, He will make our paths straight. We need to let God take the wheel, guiding our responses and actions. When He is in control, our paths are aligned with His will, and we can navigate life's challenges with grace and wisdom.
So today, ask yourself, "Who’s driving my car?" Surrender the wheel to God, and let His love, peace, and guidance lead you on the right path.
