The Necessity of Cleansing for Kingdom Citizens
"Therefore, 'Come out from them and be separate,' says the Lord. 'Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.'" - 2 Corinthians 6:17
As citizens of God's Kingdom, we are called to a higher standard of living. Our salvation is not contingent upon our actions; it is a gift freely given by God's grace when we repent and confess Christ as our Savior. Yet, salvation is just the beginning of our journey with Christ.
Paul emphasizes the importance of sanctification—the ongoing process of cleansing and renewal that occurs after salvation. This process is not about earning our salvation but about reflecting the holiness of the God we serve. It's about aligning our lives with His will and becoming more like Christ each day.
The Greek word "katharizo" conveys the idea of cleansing or purifying from that which contaminates or defiles. It's a concept that encompasses both physical and spiritual purification. Just as we cleanse our bodies to maintain physical health, so too must we cleanse our spirits to maintain spiritual health.
Sanctification involves bringing every aspect of our lives under the authority of Christ. It's about surrendering our desires, habits, and behaviors to His will. This may mean abstaining from certain activities or behaviors that are contrary to God's Word, not to earn salvation, but because we are saved.
Paul urges us not to accept the grace of God in vain but to actively participate in the work of sanctification. This lifelong spiritual cleanse or detox is essential for reflecting the image of God in our lives and gaining access to His power.
As we yield to the work of the Holy Spirit, we are transformed into the likeness of Christ, from one degree of glory to another. Our ultimate goal is to be conformed to the image of Christ, reflecting His character and attributes to the world around us.
Decide today to commit to a life of ongoing cleansing and renewal, allowing God to purify our hearts and minds. May we embrace the process of sanctification, knowing that it is through this work that we become more like the Holy God we serve.
