Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
Something incredible happens when followers of Jesus step out of their comfort zone and step into the messy reality of this world we live in. Sure, it might be easier to stay within the walls of the church where we feel comfortable and safe; but if we never step outside of our comfort zone, we’re missing out in ministering to people who will never set foot in a church.
I firmly believe that when we step out, ministry goes forth, the Word is preached, the Holy Ghost falls, and people get saved. Rather than them coming to the church, the church goes to them.
We often assume that in order for worship to happen, for the Gospel to be preached, and for ministry to transpire, the people must come to the church. They must wake up on Sunday morning, between a defined set of hours that we determine, and they must come to a building to get what is there for them. But the pandemic has forced us into realizing that people can get God anywhere, using a variety of means. We are reaching people who may have never come to church because they don’t like how church folk treat them. They have found church on FB Live, YouTube, and various other apps, and they’ve been able to receive the Word without dealing with narrowminded Christians in the process.
Maybe this is the season for us to focus more on being the Church instead of having church, and we do that by leaving the four walls of the church and walking into the homes and lives of people. Just because we can’t have church in the building, doesn’t mean we can’t be the Church outside of the building. Perhaps this is the time for us to fellowship with people before we try to fix them; to sit with people and talk to people before we obsess about trying to change them.
