Write Another Chapter!
“It is God alone who judges; He decides who will rise and who will fall. For the Lord holds a cup in His hand that is full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours out the wine in judgment, and all the wicked must drink it, draining it to the dregs.” - Psalm 75:7-8
What does the Bible say when it comes to the times in our lives when closure isn’t an option? What does it say when you have to come to terms with the fact that something that you once counted as very important is now over?
You can give back your ex’s stuff, delete them off social media, and try to spend less time with your mutual friends. But if it’s been years since the breakup and you’re still hurting, you may need to take other steps.
Psalm 75 is a little lesson for all of us on how to move forward even when getting closure is not possible. For the past two Psalms (73-74), the psalmist has been asking God for clarity on a series of issues about which he is struggling. He wants to know why it seems as if the wicked are always prospering and those who are living right are always struggling.
He doesn’t understand why the righteous are suffering but the wicked seem to be doing so well. They have been displaced from their homeland, oppressed by foreign powers, and are struggling to understand how it all happened.
The fear the psalmist experiences in chapter 73 is met with the confidence he rediscovers in chapter 75. He was able to move on even though he didn’t get closure. That ought to be a word of encouragement for those of you who have been imprisoned by some experience in your past.
See, what the enemy wants you to think is that the prior chapter was your last chapter. But the psalmist shows us that regardless of how bad, traumatic, disappointing, and devastating our last chapter was, we can write another chapter! If you haven’t already, go give Psalm 75 a read.
