Thank You For Being A Friend
“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” - Proverbs 18:24
In the late 1980s, there was a popular sitcom about four mature women who shared a home in Miami, Florida. The show starred Beatrice Arthur who played strong-willed Dorothy, Betty White who played spacey Rose, Ruth McClanahan who played the sensual southern belle Blanche, and Estelle Getty who played the matriarch Sophia.
The award-winning show called Golden Girls chronicled the joys and struggles of these three widows and one divorcee, as they attempted to navigate the senior, or golden, years of their lives in the same home. For seven seasons and 180 episodes, we see these four women wrestle with many of the challenges that come in life, especially when it comes to living with other people.
In the process, they have arguments and disagreements, but invariably they find a way to be there for one another in the end. It is the theme song of the show that I find memorable. It opened every episode with a song entitled “Thank You for Being a Friend.” The characters lived out on TV what most of us, unfortunately, find out the hard way in life, that only time will teach you who your real friends are.
Friendship is important because no matter who you are in life, you are going to need somebody, someone to support you, someone to console you, someone to stand with and by you. God has created us to be social beings. We are not created to try and make it through the ups and downs, the trials and troubles, the good times and the bad times that life sends our way by ourselves. All of us need some people close to us who are concerned about our condition in life.
Proverbs 18:24 tells us, “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Who are your friends that stick closer than a brother? Who can you rely on and call when you are in times of need? If this kind of friendship is something you lack, begin praying that God sends you the friends you need. And if you have them, let them know how thankful you are for the role they play in your life!
