Profits and Promotions
“And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.” - Luke 2:7
Today, we look at the last person who missed Jesus. Over the last two days, we have looked at King Herod and his inability to act in the moment, always putting Jesus on the back burner. Then we looked at the priests and scribes who thought the knowledge of Jesus was enough.
But now we come to the innkeeper alluded to in Luke 2:7. The verse says, “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.”
He’s the person who basically told Mary and Joseph, “Sorry folks, we are out of rooms, I can’t help you.”
I don’t know what was on his mind at the time, but perhaps in the midst of doing his job, in the midst of everything that was going on, trying to advance the corporate ladder, he puts profits and promotions over people. And as a consequence, he missed the most important guest he could have ever had.
I bet you if the emperor wanted to check in he would have found a room. I bet you if some dignitary or celebrity was in town and wanted to stay the night, he would have worked something out. Just think of the notoriety that would have been brought to his establishment once people heard that Caesar was there.
But this no named family? Not worth the extra effort. Sorry. There’s no room. And how sad that is when you think about it in retrospect. The innkeeper was right there where Jesus was and missed Him.
He missed Him because He was too caught up in advancing his own life and career. Little did he know the child being born would change his (and everyone’s) world like nothing else, ever.
Are you missing Jesus? Have you put Him on the back burner? Do you think logic is enough? Are you chasing profits and promotions over knowing the one true Savior? It’s time to get serious. Don’t miss Him for another day. Get right with Jesus, NOW.
There is no better decision you will ever make!
