Fast For It

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” - Joel 2:12


Fasting is one of the weapons God has given us to engage in spiritual warfare whenever the enemy tries to defeat us, discourage us, or deter us. Fasting is one way of tapping into the Lord’s power to deal with and confront obstacles, hurdles, hindrances, and trials down here on earth.

When there are demons you can’t defeat with your own strength and power, “fast for it.” When there are mountains you need to move out of your way, “fast for it.” When there are demonic attempts against your life, your faith, your family, your health, and your finances, fasting is a tool God gives us to obtain spiritual power.

Good intentions are noble, and a nice resume is commendable, but there are some problems Jesus says can only be addressed through the discipline of fasting. Fasting includes, but is more than simply, abstaining from food. Any activity, practice, or habit that you give up for a period as a sacrifice to the Lord is a fast. It is the act of denying one’s flesh—denying instant gratification—to gain spiritual awareness.

One can fast from such things as television, social media, shopping, sweets, partying, smoking, or alcohol. One can abstain from becoming angry, complaining, cursing, overworking, sexual activity, etc. One can even sacrifice time to spend more effort on prayer, meditation and studying God’s Word.

Why is fasting important? Because you are showing God that He is worth giving something up for. God wants to see you “put your money where your mouth is.” But in this case, it may not be money. However, it is something carnal of value to you, something that you rely on or consistently do, that you may place before spending time with God.

He wants you to give it up and give it to Him. There are so many great benefits to fasting, and we will talk about those in the next few days. But if you want to have access to a spiritual power unlike any other, fast for it!
