Revenge Is Not The Answer
“You say, ‘I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge with equity.’” (Psalm 75:2)
One of the greatest comforts we have as followers of Christ is that the Lord protects us and fights our battles. We serve a strong, capable, righteous God who takes care of injustice in His own way and in His own time. Unfortunately, we don’t always rest in this comfort and instead try to take matters into our own hands. We want those who hurt us to hurt too.
Too many of us, during seasons of pain and uncertainty, try to fight fire with fire and seek revenge. We want to one-up those who hurt us. We want to get back at those who did us wrong. But it is not our job to impart justice on others. That is a job for God and God alone.
Instead of seeking revenge, one of the best responses we can have in the midst of hurtful circumstances is silence. Silence doesn’t mean you’re weak. Rather, it means you are letting the Lord be your defense. It takes a secure and confident person to trust God’s timing when your flesh is screaming at you to handle things right now on your own.
The true mark of Christian maturity is revealed in the ability to let the Lord fight our battles. Is there a battle you’ve been trying to fight that you need to surrender over to God? Have you spent too much time obsessing over how he could betray you or why she left or why they won’t apologize? If so, make the decision today to hand everything over to Jesus. As 1 Peter 5 says, “cast all your cares on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Put the weight of your pain in the hand of the one who can handle it, and rest in the comfort of God’s protection and faithfulness.
