Be Honest With God
“I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble. When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way. In the path where I walk people have hidden a snare for me.” - Psalms 142:2-3
One of the most maligned characters in Christian history is the disciple Thomas. He constantly appears in Scripture questioning or voicing his uncertainty about the plans of Jesus Christ. The problem with Thomas isn’t that he’s unwilling to fight or die for Jesus. The issue is that he just needs everything proven or explained to him because until he is convinced, he is not going to blindly follow.
Thomas is not ashamed to express his doubts. After Jesus was crucified, Thomas proclaimed, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe” (John 20:25). While many castigate Thomas for his doubting ways, his transparency is something more believers need to practice.
Thomas had the courage to express the uncertainty in his mind and the fear in his heart. Rather than feeling like he had to put on a front to appear noble, he just explained what he felt and what he was going through.
Thomas models that expressing your fears rather than suppressing them is the healthiest thing you can do when you face difficult seasons in your life. God wants you to come to Him with your doubts, fears, and anxieties. He can handle them. God wants a real, genuine relationship with you. And He wants you to be real with Him.
So next time you are filled with doubt or fear, take your concerns to the Lord. He can handle it, and He wants to meet you where you are. Remember, God has a big plan for your life, and He wants to do everything He can to help you fulfill His plan.
