Comfort is Not the Goal
"And he said to them all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'" – Luke 9:23
There’s nothing wrong with comfort. It feels good to settle into what’s familiar, predictable, and manageable. But if you follow Jesus long enough, you’ll find He rarely leads you where comfort is king. That’s because comfort is not His goal. Transformation is.
We serve a God who calls people out. Out of boats. Out of safe careers. Out of familiar places. Out of excuses. Why? Because He knows what’s on the other side of comfort is often growth, blessing, power, and purpose. If you’re always looking for the most comfortable path, you might be missing the one God is trying to lead you down.
Comfort can become a trap. It can make you passive. It can keep you stuck in routines that no longer require faith. It can make you crave safety more than surrender. And little by little, it can make you settle for a life that’s small, safe, and spiritually dull.
God has more in mind for you than that. He’s not trying to make your life easier. He’s trying to make it fruitful. He’s not just trying to protect your routine. He’s trying to launch you into calling. He doesn’t just want to keep you safe. He wants to make you strong.
If you look through Scripture, the most powerful stories always start with a step away from comfort. Abraham left his homeland. Moses left his quiet life in Midian. Ruth left her culture and her people. The disciples left their nets, their businesses, and their expectations. None of those journeys were easy. But every one of them led to something greater.
Maybe you’re clinging too tightly to what’s easy. Maybe you’ve been praying for a breakthrough but refusing to leave what feels secure. Maybe the very thing holding you back is your refusal to let go of comfort.
You will never step into the fullness of what God has for you if you keep returning to what feels comfortable. But the moment you trust Him enough to follow Him beyond what feels safe, you’ll discover just how faithful and how good He truly is.
