A God of Comfort
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
One time at a mall, I noticed a father trying to console his young child. The toddler was visibly upset and running away from his dad because his father wouldn’t buy him a toy that he really wanted.
When the father finally caught up with his son to hold him in his arms, the child’s face grimaced, his brow furrowed inward, he crossed his arms in utter disgust, and then he said something that literally blew my mind.
He angrily said, “I don’t like you any more daddy. I hate you.” In that moment, I started ducking because, in my tradition, that is not how a child speaks to his father. And I was nervous for the boy because in my experience I knew what could happen if a child spoke to an adult, let alone his parent in that way.
But the response of this father was quite different from what I had anticipated. Rather than rebuking, scolding, or spanking the child, this father picked him up, looked into his eyes, and smiled at him, as if to convey that he understood the child’s feelings, and to reassure him that even though he was upset not getting what he wanted, and even though he acted ugly and disrespectful in that moment, the father still loved his child and everything would be all right.
Does this sound familiar? If you are a believer, this is exactly how our Heavenly Father responds when we aren’t happy. He doesn’t yell at us. He doesn’t get aggressive with us. This father was a perfect depiction of what our Heavenly Father does when we grow angry with Him.
God wants you to come to Him when you are angry, and He will comfort you. This does not always mean He will change things, but He does have your best interest at heart. Just as this father did, God will see you, He will secure you, and He will show you the way. He is a God of comfort!
