It’s Going To Take More Than That
“A certain man in Maon, who had property there at Carmel, was very wealthy. He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing in Carmel. His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings— he was a Calebite.” - 1 Samuel 25:2-3
As we read today’s key passage, let’s take a look at the story of Abigail and Nabal. As the verses above describe, Abigail was a beautiful woman who had many great qualities. Her husband, Nabal, on the other hand, was what many people would call an “idiot.” This was quite literally the meaning of the name that his parents chose to give him. But Abigail married Nabal because he was very wealthy.
You or someone you know may identify with Abigail, having developed a relationship based on something superficial, whether it was because of the money someone possessed, the attractiveness they displayed, the charisma they exuded, or the clout and connections they built. While these qualities sound enticing, what you learn along the way is that the relationship does not last without a firm foundation.
This greater longing is a result of your conscience telling you that God has so much more in store for you! Don’t get me wrong; money, a good-looking romantic partner, and important connections are not necessarily bad things. But if that is all the individual brings to the table, you will soon realize fast that it is not going to last.
The relationships you truly desire are ones established in trust and loyalty—those that motivate you to pursue God’s will, which will lead to the very best life has to offer! God will place the right people in your life. These are people who will add immense value and wisdom. Just make sure you are not choosing them for that one quality, knowing they do not have much else to offer. Because if you do, you will soon find out, it really does take more than that.
