Faith Without Deeds
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. (James 2:14-17)
When it comes to how our faith is portrayed to other people, we can either be Christians who only talk the talk, or we can walk the walk. In other words, we can say all the right things, quote all of the right Bible verses, and have lengthy conversations about our knowledge of God. Or we can walk out our faith by the way we show love, speak with kindness, share compassion, and serve humbly.
James, the brother of Jesus, writes about this concept of accompanying your faith with deeds. He says that if our faith is not shown by our actions, then it’s as good as dead. Therefore, we must be living our lives in a way that we act out our faith, not just talk about it in order to impress other people.
Scripture says that if we love God, we will obey His commands. Meaning that our love and devotion to Him is made evident by how we act in obedience towards Him. However, on the other side of the coin, if we’re saying we love God, but we’re mistreating other people, we’re living pridefully and selfishly; we’re neglecting to serve those in need and we don’t love the Lord the way we claim to with our words.
Are you living your life in a way that your actions are proof of your faith? Or are you more concerned with sounding spiritually strong with your words? If the latter is true, my prayer is that you would ask the Lord to reposition your heart to be more focused on obeying Him and honoring Him with your actions, and that your love for Him would become evident by the way you live out your faith.
