When Prayer Becomes Personal
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and see my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14-15
As a follower of Christ, when you make time for prayer, when you prioritize prayer, it becomes personal. The text tells us over and over again to pray in every situation and every circumstance. Then the results come when your prayers become personal, and they are based upon your personal relationship with God.
The seventh chapter of 2 Chronicles talks about how personal prayer can become. The writer tells us to humble ourselves in prayer and to seek the face of God. When you’re seeking someone’s face, when you’re looking closely for someone, that’s personal. It’s not an act you can do from a distance. Seeking someone’s face implies closeness and intimacy, and that’s exactly what we should be experiencing when we spend time with the Lord in prayer.
David describes his personal prayer time with God in Psalm 5:3 when he says, “In the morning, Lord you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” Through this verse, David is reminding us that when our prayers become up close and personal, we take a posture of surrender and expectation. We hand over our requests to God, and then we wait expectantly, full of hope for Him to answer.
There is something so special that happens in your relationship with the Lord when your prayers become this personal. You become more dependent on Him, and you begin to more clearly grasp how well you are known by Him.
When you pray to your Heavenly Father, are your prayers personal and intimate, or are they distant and reserved? If the latter is true for you, I would encourage you to start praying personal prayers today. Don’t wait any longer to see what God can do in and through you when you draw near to Him in prayer.
