The More Difficult… The More Present
“But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken!” - Isaiah 54:17
If you want to know the recipe for resilience, you must understand that it starts with a firm belief and a strong conviction in the reality and presence of God. That is key because it is that conviction that tells us something about the character of God. The psalmist in Psalm 46 says that God is “a very present help in (the time of) trouble.”
Notice the modifier the psalmist places in front of the adjective, “present.” It is not just that God is a present help in times of trouble. God is a “very” present help. The point here is that the more trouble you’re in, the more present He becomes.
God is not like those people who determine how available they are to us based upon the gravity of what you are going through. You know how it is. If you need to borrow a cup of sugar, they are there for you. But if you need a place to stay for a few nights, they are nowhere to be found.
If you want prayer because your car got repossessed, they’re fine. But if you need a ride to church, they don’t want to inconvenience themselves. The psalmist is saying that God does not disappear on us when life gets more difficult. The text is trying to teach us that resilience comes when we are convinced of the reliability of God.
It is resilience that is essential to overcome life’s adversities. It is paramount to conquer life’s trials. Your faith in people, places, and things may waver, but never let your faith in God be shaken. When you have unshakeable confidence in God, you can face life’s challenges with an inner assurance, knowing nothing you face is too hard for the Lord.
Our trust is not based on a naive notion that nothing bad can or will happen to us as believers, but rather when trials come, and they will come, that God is still in control. This is why the Bible tells us no weapon formed against us shall prosper.
The weapon may form, trials may ensue, and enemies may attack, but none of it will succeed. The more difficult the circumstance, the more present your God will be in your life!
