Keep Working
“Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices.” - Ezra 3:3
Over the next three days, we are going to discuss how you can treat your triggers. It is important to remember that God loves you and He has your back. If you want to treat your triggers, the first thing you must do is KEEP WORKING.
Working is a sign of present strength and a necessary determination (despite the past and despite the pain) that you are still trying to accomplish something useful and important for yourself. The book of Ezra shows that yes, the people were fearful and they may have wept, but they didn’t let that prevent them from working. They did not let their lament prevent them from living.
Ezra was somehow able to get the people of God to suspend their sorrows in order to the altar and temple. Work is a fundamental part of the human equation, and it is a necessary part of our ability to enjoy a quality life. It offers a productive set of activities that provide a constructive outlet for one’s emotions and energy.
The Israelites had been in captivity and were abused and mistreated. The dwindling Jewish community was under siege and rapidly disintegrating. They were physically threatened and were intermarrying. They were depressed, but the amazing prescription for them was to get to WORK.
When you get triggered, and something sets in that opens the wounds of your past, you cannot stop there. You may weep, but then you must get back to work. As the saying goes, “One monkey don’t stop no show.” One setback does not impede progress.
KEEP WORKING. God has a special plan and a special purpose for your life. Satan will do anything he can to distract you, and this includes triggering old wounds. But God wants you to do what the Israelites did under the watch of Ezra, keep working. Your story is not finished!
