Expiration Date
“If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” - Romans 14:8
When you look at the penultimate moments in Abraham’s journey of faith with God, you will arrive at the occasion of a very sad, but inevitable rite of passage we all will eventually face. Here we learn of the death and departure of Abraham’s lifelong partner, Sarah.
As you read this account, you learn her age at the time of her passing, and you read about the sorrow Abraham must have felt that is common when you lose someone you love. What is interesting is that there are actually more words combined in a few lines concerning Sarah than are found in the entire faith narrative of Abraham.
That is right. More is said about Sarah in death than is said in life, which we can take as the importance of death. The truth is that there is an expiration date associated with our time here on earth, and none of us can escape it. It does not matter who you are, how much you have, or how important you consider yourself to be. Death is a part of life, and it reminds all of us of our own mortality.
Romans 14:8 says, “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” Death is coming. It might be days away, weeks away, months away, or years away. But we all have an expiration date. The question, is will you be ready for yours? Are you following Romans 14:8 and living for the Lord?
In the end, nothing else will matter. You cannot take any earthly possessions with you to heaven. The house you live in, the car you drive, the clothes you wear. None of them will be with you in heaven. The only thing that will matter is what you did for God. That is it. Knowing this, knowing that you have an expiration date, are you living in the will of God? It is definitely something to think about. Because what else truly matters?
