Desperation Driven
“‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will delver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.’” - Psalm 91:14-16
When it comes to following God, you must not let desperation drive your decisions. In Genesis 16, Abram made a decision out of the frustration he felt in the chapter before. God was not moving when Abram thought He should move, and God was not working how Abram thought He should work.
Abram and Sarai believed God’s revelation upon their lives, but they were struggling with the manifestation of it all. From their perspective, they were on the clock. Abram was now 85 and Sarai was 75. The thought of conceiving a child appeared to have expired. In their minds, the issue wasn’t whether they heard God’s voice; they just thought that perhaps they misunderstood His message.
All that considered, Sarai’s suggestion for Abram to sleep with Hagar, and Abram’s willingness to go along with the plan, are a result of them believing that there is not a lot of time left for God to do what He said He would. If the promise is going to happen, it must happen now; and if it hasn’t happened, then God must have meant for it to happen another way.
Have you ever felt desperate for God to answer you? Have you been desperate to leave your current situation and move into a new one, so you try to make it happen on your own? God knows what He is doing. And He is always on time! One of the worst things we can do in our season of waiting is to make decisions that are driven by desperation. Wait patiently for God to act. For what He said He would do, He is sure to do!
