Letting God Tear Down the Fences
“He himself is our peace.” - Ephesians 2:14
Christmas morning carries a different kind of excitement. The world slows down, and even for a few minutes, the heart feels a hint of peace it has been craving all year. Moments like this make it easier to notice the things inside you that have been closed off. Fences go up slowly. A disappointment pushes one board into place. A painful conversation adds another. Before long, the heart feels surrounded by walls you never meant to build.
Those fences seem protective at first. They keep you from feeling exposed. They create distance from anything that reminds you of past hurt. After a while, though, the space behind the fence feels smaller than it should. Joy gets limited. Connection becomes harder. The relationships God designed to strengthen you never reach the deeper parts of your heart because the door stays shut.
Grace changes that. When God steps into the quiet places you hide, He does not approach with pressure but with gentleness. He knows why the fence went up. He understands the reasons you started pulling back. Instead of shaming you for building it, He begins loosening the boards one by one. His peace settles in places where fear used to sit. His presence softens what became rigid over time.
Restoration often begins with one simple moment of trust. You bring God a piece of the story you avoided. You let Him speak into a wound you usually protect. You allow His voice to interrupt the thoughts that kept the gate locked. Healing grows from those small openings. As His grace fills the spaces you once guarded, you start to feel lighter. Relationships that once felt complicated begin to feel possible again.
Christmas reminds us that God comes close. He stepped into a broken world with the intention of restoring what had been damaged. He still moves that way today. If the year has left your heart fenced in, let Him meet you there this morning. Ask Him to begin dismantling what fear, hurt, or disappointment has built.
Peace waits on the other side of the walls you no longer need. Let God tear them down and allow His healing to reach the places you thought were off limits.
