How Do You Feel?
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” - Psalm 62:8
Yesterday, we talked about being “over it.” Perhaps there is some part of your life, or just your life in general, that you just feel “over” everything. If you are seeking to navigate such a moment, there are some important, teachable nuggets and keen insights that can be derived from Numbers 11 on how to beat anxiety and the feeling of being over it.
The first thing this text suggests is that the path toward beating anxiety starts with being honest about how you feel. What is refreshing about what we’re told here is that in his conversation with God, Moses is very transparent with his emotions and is very candid and honest with God about how he feels. He does not sugarcoat anything.
So many people struggle to handle their anxiety because they are so accustomed to putting a filter on their feelings that they never get real with God or themselves. They mask their unhappiness with religious cliches and rhetoric. They say they’re fine when they aren’t.
But Moses doesn’t do any of that. He doesn’t over-spiritualize how he feels. He doesn’t say he’s cool when’s he not. I believe that is because he understands that emotional maturity and spiritual growth don’t mean you have to be fake, phony, or artificial. He is able to be honest with God because he is able to be honest with himself.
Is this something you struggle with? Do you have trouble being real with yourself? More importantly, do you have trouble being real with God? Psalm 62:8 tells us, “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” God wants you to pour your heart out to Him. He wants you to be honest.
When is the last time you stopped and asked, “How do I feel?” and then took it to God? I promise you, friend, He can handle anything you throw at Him. Happy? Tell him about it. Sad? Tell Him about it. Frustrated? Anxious? Worried? Tell Him about it. He wants you to pour your heart out to Him!
