A Desire For Him
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.” - Psalm 73:25
As we continue to discuss the things we need to “quench our thirst” for Christ, or “rekindle the fire,” we look at the next thing we must do. We know from yesterday we must allow God to replenish our souls, but we must also tap into our deep desire for Him.
As Psalm 42 says, “as a deer pants for water my soul longs for you God.” This notion taps into that intense desire for God that we should each have. Imagine a deer panting for water, not just out of depletion, but desperation. We therefore should be so desperate for the divine, and so passionate in our spiritual pursuits that it is more than just an intellectual interest.
It is the reality that our lives are lost without God in them. How would you characterize your thirst for God? Are you on fire or is your pursuit lackluster at best? It is not until we shift our desire to be connected to the deeper plan and calling that He has for our lives that we find fulfillment.
The tragedy is that the world leads us to pursue everything but that which really matters. The world tells us to chase cash, cars, clothes, houses, titles, positions, prestige, and relationships, none of which can fill the hole in our soul. The material things we collect and pursue may gratify the flesh, but they do not satisfy the yearning of our soul.
This is what led Jesus to ask in Mark 8, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” Here, Jesus reveals the importance of having a soul that has a deep, intense desire for Him.
So what do you long for? If you got everything you wished for, would you really be satisfied? Or would you want more? More clothes? More cars? More recognition? It is not until you understand the intense desire and need for Christ that everything starts to align. Do you understand how much you really need Him?
