God Knows Best
“You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.” - Psalm 139:2-3
Sometimes, what we believe to be a good idea turns out to be the exact opposite. We learn this principle in Genesis 16 when Sarai (who had not borne Abram a child) suggests that Abram sleep with her Egyptian handmaiden, Hagar. This would allow Abram to have offspring. Sarai loves Abram and wants to make him happy. However, even though she loves him, what she thinks is a good idea is not a God idea.
Sarai’s proposition leads Abram to suspend his faith and to follow his flesh. This results in animosity between Abram and Sarai because when Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to despise Sarai. Sarai says to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me” (Genesis 16: 4-5).
Have you ever placed your will, or somebody else’s will, above God’s will? We are all guilty of following our carnal inclinations. The problem is that we don’t see the big picture and often operate in fear, doubt, or anxiety about our situation, when we could obtain peace from letting go of the reigns.
When you are in a situation and need guidance, make sure you first seek God’s advice through prayer. It will save you from the unnecessary stress and headache. Remember, only God knows what is best for you.
