Worship When You’re Discouraged
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. (Job 1:21)
Job’s life story is one that shows us that regardless of what struggles and discouragement you face, life still goes on. Even when disappointments and hardships come up, we must keep going. He was able to reach that resolve by putting his situation in its proper perspective.
Job was initially discouraged. He tore his clothes and shaved his head according to verse 20, which was a sign of grief at the time. He was disappointed. He was down. He might have even been depressed, but the one thing we should observe from Job is that he didn’t stay there. Instead, he chose to worship the Lord because he knew God was and always is sovereign.
Divine sovereignty signifies that God is the one who sits on the throne of the universe. He is the ruler of all things, directing all things, and always working everything out in accordance with the purpose of His will (Ephesians 1:11).
In his God-permitted affliction, Job acknowledged God’s greatness and splendor. He said, “I know that you can do all things, no plan of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). As time went on, Job was able to realize that God’s purposes are supreme, and He is sovereign.
The same is true in regard to whatever you’re walking through right now. If you’re currently facing disappointment and hardship, if you’re discouraged, confused, or upset, don’t stay there. Instead, cling to the peace that comes from trusting in the sovereignty of God. His purpose will always prevail, and His plans will always come to pass.
