Reliance on God
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."* – Philippians 4:13
Paul’s secret to contentment wasn’t about his strength, his abilities, or his willpower. Instead, it was rooted in his reliance on God. He knew that true contentment doesn’t come from pushing ourselves through difficulties by sheer force of will.
It doesn’t come from pretending everything is fine or convincing ourselves that we should be happy. Contentment comes when we lean on God’s strength and trust in His ability to sustain us, even in the toughest moments.
Paul’s contentment didn’t make his circumstances disappear. He was still in prison. His enemies didn’t vanish. But his reliance on Christ gave him the strength to endure without losing his peace of mind. Contentment doesn’t mean we ignore the pain or the challenges. It means we find strength in God’s presence through it all.
So, let me ask you: who or what are you leaning on? Are you trusting in your own intellect, your ability to push through, or your material possessions to bring you peace? If so, you’ll always find yourself falling short. You’ll always be anxious because nothing in this world can give you the lasting peace you need. But when you lean into God, when you trust in His power to sustain you, even the darkest valleys become bearable.
Contentment isn’t something we can manufacture ourselves. It’s a fruit of the Spirit. It comes when we are filled with joy and peace, and these are not fruits we can produce on our own. You can’t force yourself to be content. You can’t think your way into peace. It only comes through Christ. The secret to contentment isn’t found in the hustle or the chase. It’s found in being satisfied with what we have and trusting that God is enough.
Paul tells us he had to learn this contentment through experience. It wasn’t always easy for him, and it’s not always easy for us. But the more we rely on God’s strength rather than our own, the more we’ll find that contentment isn’t about what we have or don’t have. It’s about trusting that with God, we have everything we need.
