The Church of Hope, Healing, and Reconciliation
"Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." - John 8:7
As Christians, it is easy to become judgmental of others and forget that we too are sinners in need of God's grace. The story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8 reminds us of this truth. The Pharisees were ready to stone her, but Jesus challenged them to examine their own hearts and remember their own sins. He showed mercy to the woman and told her to go and sin no more.
Sadly, there are times when the church fails to show this same mercy and grace. It is not uncommon to hear of young girls being kicked out of the choir or shamed for getting pregnant, while the men who got them pregnant are often not held accountable. This is not the kind of church Jesus intended. He did not come to condemn the world but to save it.
We should be a church that promotes hope, healing, and reconciliation. We should be a place where people feel safe to come and be themselves, even with all their faults and failures. After all, Jesus himself said that he did not come for the righteous, but for sinners.
God is not invested in the list of our moral faults and failures. He is invested in us, his beloved children. He wants us to come to him, not as perfect people, but as broken and imperfect ones in need of his love and mercy. As a church, we should follow his example and extend that love and mercy to others.
In conclusion, let us remember the words of Jesus in John 8:7, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." May we be a church that promotes hope, healing, and reconciliation, and extends the love and mercy of God to all who come through our doors.
