Perfect Unity
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” - Colossians 3:13-14
When you choose to forgive others, regardless of what they have done to you, and you choose to put on love, you will find perfect unity with those around you. And couldn’t this world use a little more unity?
Colossians 3:13-14 says, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Oftentimes, it is a lack of forgiveness that keeps us from unifying. We hang on to things others have done to us, not considering what they have been through or what caused them to treat us in the way they did. Instead, we are quick to anger and slow to choose love.
But this verse commands us to “put on love.” And as we looked at yesterday, love is not keeping a record of rights and wrongs. It is not easily angered. Love forgives and love is patient. And when you choose to put on love, you can be unified with a lot more people.
In a world desperate for unity, the answers are right in front of us. The Bible tells us exactly how we can live in perfect unity. And yet, we continue to be selfish. We say, “Yeah, but...” We point the blame on others as if they are the only ones who sin.
But do you not realize God knows what they did to you? He knew before the Bible was written what they would do to you. He didn’t say “Forgive and love, except if...” No, He simply said to forgive and love.
Jesus died for us, knowing we would rebel against Him. Yet He chose to forgive us and has given us an endless amount of second chances. Who are you to take away that second chance from others? Choose to forgive. Choose to love. And live in the perfect unity God has designed us to experience.
