You Will Rise Again
“Jesus told her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ ...Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this, Martha?’” - John 11:23, 25
As we discussed yesterday, John 11 paints a picture of what we should do when life hits us with difficult and trying circumstances. For Mary and Martha, that came in the form of their brother’s death. These women were devastated because they believed that, had Jesus been there, their brother would not have died.
Many believers get consumed in their problems and distance themselves from God. They stop worshipping. They stop attending church. They stop praying. Some may blame themselves because they believe they are being punished for something. Others may blame God because why would a loving God allow this to happen?
However, that pain is not meant to break us, but to build us. Writer C.S. Lewis put it, “We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” There is purpose in your pain. And Jesus will be there in the midst of it.
Martha knew to run to Jesus with her problem. When Martha cried out for her brother, Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again... I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
Jesus went on to raise Lazarus from the dead. Why? Because what looks dead to us can be resurrected by God if it’s meant to be. You might be in a season of difficulty, but there is a season of rejoicing on the way. Keep your faith, keep trusting God, and you will rise again!
