The Blessing Of Redemption
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. (Ephesians 1:7)
There are so many blessings we’ve received from Jesus Christ as His followers. Over the next few days, I want us to look at each of these five blessings more closely.
The first blessing we’ve received from the Son of God is redemption. When Jesus died on Calvary’s cross, when He shed His blood, He was atoning or paying the price for our sins. His death was a substitutionary act wherein His blood settled a debt for sin that we owed. Under the old covenant, whenever a person or a nation sinned against God, the shedding of blood was required to make amends for the sin that was committed. In the temple, blood from an unblemished animal sacrifice was ceremonially and sacrificially poured on the "mercy seat" or on the altar to pay the price for the sins of the nation.
But in the New Covenant, the debt for sin was so great, that only the blood of the Lamb of God could settle the debt of sin that we owed. When we sing, "What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus! What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!," we are grounding our understanding of spiritual freedom upon the affirmation that we are in right standing with God not because of anything we have done, but because of what Jesus did on Calvary.
Jesus became the sacrificial lamb who took away the sins of the world. The reason we have power working within us, therefore, is that God the Son redeemed us, Paul says, by paying the debt for sin that you and I could not pay. To be redeemed simply means to be rescued from trouble. And aren’t we glad Jesus chose to rescue us? Let’s not take that blessing of redemption for granted.
