The Choice
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. (John 14:2-4)
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where God’s plan was very different from what you had planned? You had pictured things going one way in your head, but in reality, nothing turned out the way you expected it to. When we find ourselves in these types of circumstances, it can be easy for us to begin to worry because everything feels out of control. But what we must learn is to trust God’s greater plan, even when we can’t see the fullness of it.
Jesus tells his disciples that the reason they don’t have to worry is because his departure is part of a broader plan. In response to their fears and questions, Jesus redirects their focus from their fear to their future, from the pain of their predicament to the promise of God’s plan.
While none of them wanted to face what was about to happen, he had to help them understand that what they were going through was part of what was being orchestrated by the hand of God. They didn’t have to worry because God had a plan for their lives, for their future, and for their redemption. Therefore, they had a choice. They could either wallow in their sadness or see their situation as a setup for something greater.
We have the same choice today. We can either be sad and disappointed that life isn’t turning out the way we expected, or we can see our current circumstances as another page in God’s greater plan for our lives. What will you choose?
